How often do I have to change the device filter?

Local conditions will dictate how often the filter needs to be replaced. The filter is generally recommended to be replaced before the onset of the rainy season, and then as required for the remainder of the year. A visual inspection can quickly determine if a filter change is necessary. Typically the filter needs to be replaced 1-3 times annually.

  • Has you facility been cited or been under threat of being cited for stormwater violations
  • The Safe Drain® can quickly and cost effectively bring your facility into SPCC and SWPP compliance. Does the Safe Drain® come in different sizes?

Each Safe Drain is custom built to the size and configuration of the storm drain for which it is intended. Virtually any size or shape storm drain, including trench and curbside types, can accommodate a Safe Drain.

Will the valve freeze during the winter?

No, the valve is protected by special lubricants and will not freeze.

    What size valve is used?

The standard valve has a 4" opening, perfect for California weather. In higher precipitation climates, e.g. Portland, OR, or for very large drainage areas, a 6" or even 8" valve is an option. Valves sizes can be specified up to 12".

Do we need special construction or building permits?

In rare cases some minor construction may be necessary for installation of a Safe Drain®, but nothing that would require a construction permit. A standard Safe Drain® can be installed in about 30-45 minutes.

Will this clog my drain or prevent rain water from entering the storm drain?

With the valve open, water flows freely into the storm drain. Valve sizes are specifically designed for each Safe Drain® by accounting the area being drained and the annual rainfall history of that particular geography.

Should the Safe Drain® be kept open or closed?

One rule of thumb, if it's raining make sure that the Safe Drain™ is open. Different environments and different applications may vary in the way the Safe Drain® is utilized. Many customers keep their Safe Drain® normally closed, opening it only for rain events. Others will keep their Safe Drains™ normally open if they are located in areas that the customer considers to be "low risk." Should there be a transfer operation of a hazardous material taking place near a Safe Drain then the valve is always kept closed until that operation has been completed. The quick open and close feature of the Safe Drain® is convenient in either scenario.
